| There are three basic methods of manufacturing brick; each
imparts a different look to suit the character of your home
and your personal taste.
“Extruded Face Brick: This type of brick is manufactured
by extruding column of prepared raw material sort of like
toothpaste coming out of a tube, and slicing it into brick
size units. The effect is a fairly even and regular rectangular
shape. Many types of textures can be added as the brick is
extruded, from subtle to dramatic. This type of brick is available
in hundreds of colors and color range blends.” (Glen-Gery’s

“Machine Molded Face Brick: Sometimes referred to as
“colonial brick,” this type of brick is produced
by mechanically dumping the raw material into brick shaped
mold boxes. When the mold boxes are turned over and the material
released, the result is a brick of a slightly more irregular
shape, reminiscent of early colonial brick. On contemporary
or traditional designs, the overall look is a wonderful textural
effect and stately appearance.” (Glen-Gery’s Brief

“Handmade Face Brick: It’s amazing, but this
centuries’ old method of making brick survives to this
day. Why? Simply because no machine can replace the human
element that produces the individuality, folds and textures
of a true Handmade brick. To produce this wonderful brick,
craftsman “throws” the prepared raw material into
a wooden mold, one brick at a time. This hand-throwing results
in a surface of unparalleled beauty. Handmade brick is usually
slightly larger than standard sized extruded or molded brick,
and fewer are necessary when constructing walls. Because of
their outstanding beauty, Handmade brick is often featured
on interior walls and fireplaces as well as on the exterior
of fine homes.” (Glen-Gery’s Brief Brick Buyer’s

“Brick Shapes are also available to add a very special
touch to your home. You may have notices wonderful shaped
brick used as window sills, step treads or pool copings. Or
you may have admired beautiful straight or curved arches over
doorways and windows created with wedge-shaped brick in a
matching or contrasting color. With brick, many interesting
shapes are available to give your home special architectural
appeal. Consider adding brick shape detailing to your home,
whether it is a contemporary design or you are replicating
an architectural period or style. The difference is extraordinary.”
